The Coalition States of Earth is an authoritarian supranational union of Earth's most wealthy and powerful nations and power blocs, who together exercise complete economic, military and political hegemony over Earth and the colonies.
History
The Coalition States of Earth came into being on January 15th, 2085. Six decades prior a war between Iran and Saudi Arabia and the invention of the world's first fusion reactor led to a significant restructuring in the global balance of power. The United States had entered into decline and had ceased being the sole superpower, with the resulting oil crisis from the Iran-Saudi War opening the door to China's entry into the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union, renaming itself the Eurasian Union as the two great powers consolidated their new alliance. The new Eurasian Union and decline of the US as a global power subsequently led to the increasingly alarmed European Union to restructure itself significantly, subsuming the member-states under a new and more powerful EU Government; and consolidating Continental Europe's military forces under the new pan-European EuroForce. With the United States becoming increasingly isolationist and with the rebirth of a stronger EU, the nations of Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean Federation came together under the New Commonwealth, an old idea made anew amidst a new global balance of power.
During the Great Oil Crisis, the various national space agencies had been allowed to falter and decline, opening the way for private enterprises to take over the various space programs, investing heavily in aerospace design, fusion technology and the world's first automated Helium-3 mining facilities on the moon, later pioneering the construction of the first orbital elevators and orbital refineries.
